Key points governing mailing of parcels

Taiwan Taipei Prison’s rules for sending parcels announced in a letter:

To meet inmates’ needs, these rules are prescribed to govern the posting of parcels.

2.

The use, amount and contents of a parcel sent out or taken in must be approved before posting.

3.

The parcel is limited to the one applied for by the inmate, but this rule does not apply to a parcel posted from a foreign country for a foreign inmate.

When an inmate applies permission for posting a parcel, he should state the name, contents, and name and address of the sender. After approval, this prison will make a list of contents for pasting on the parcel. The weight of the parcel is limited to two kilograms, and food is banned.

The goods inside the parcel must be in the need of the inmate and are limited to three items. Only one parcel can be sent in a month unless under special circumstances.

Posting a medicine must be applied by the inmate himself and its need must be confirmed by a doctor of this prison, who must write a prescription for the family to buy the drug for mailing.

The prescription must be attached to the parcel. After inspection by the health section, the parcel will be handed over to the addressed inmate, who should submit the medicine to the chief of his block for custody for use under supervision.

The parcel will be checked by Health and Hygiene Section.

If it is found the parcel does not have the list of contents on the surface of the parcel as stipulated, it will be returned to the sender intact, who should pay for the postage. If it is found after opening that its contents are not consistent with the listing, it should be returned to the sender. If the inmate agrees to have it destroyed, it will be done accordingly after the inmate affixes his signature to the parcel registration book.

If the parcel is opened with the inmate’s agreement and contrabands are found in it, the case will be handled according to the prison’s regulations and the offender will be punished according to law.
